Summary
Possibly, the origin of the insurance policy in the Basque Country is to be found in charity. Mutualities were created to repair damages caused to one person and split the cost between several individuals. The convenience of being insured is quite evident, and this study covers only those types of insurance which are not mercantile in nature (that is, their purpose is not to generate profit) around which cattle farmers constitute societies which they administer themselves. Such societies should have a regulation. On the other hand, reinsurance insures societies and may have a regional or provincial nature
