Summary

In 1784, the corregidor José Joaquín Colón de Larreategui condemned María VenturaNabarnizaga, Josefa Garay and María Josefa de Luja, all of them citizens of Abando, for the greatpublic scandal caused by their bad life, customs and habits, since «they used to entertain in their ownhouses». As well as being condemned, another consequence was that María Ventura Nabarnizagawas involved in a divorce process. It is on the basis of this event that this paper approaches earlymodern society. It analyses the connotations of the word scandal, and how these may (or may not)change when the protagonist of the uproar is a woman. It also looks at how society reacted, therole played by civil and religious institutions in Abando and the consequences for the three families.
