Summary

This article describes the potential impact of Machine Translation on languages ; of the smaller speech communities, such as Basque, in each of three basic ; environments, translation for assimilation, translation for dissemination and translation in interactive situations. It presents the current state of research and development in MT and discusses issues related to evaluating MT systems and MT output.
