The literary University of Vitoria-Gasteiz was founded in 1869 and initially comprised the Faculties of Law, Philosophy and Letters and Sciences. The most important problem of the University was the validity of degrees and academic diplomas which, together with the instability caused by the third Carlist war and tension in the municipality were finally to close the University.
