Summary
Álava will be one of the most prominent protagonists of the Navy of the Enlightenment era. 1795 and 1803 he will assume command of the renowned Asian squadron aimed for the defence of the Philippines. He will participate in the Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805, and he will protect in 1809 the Bay of Cadiz from the French invasion during the Peninsular War.
