Summary

One of the factors that can contribute to explain the peculiarity of Basque culture is rural sport. Currently, in schools, due to various causes such as the influence of the media, materials, sports facilities, etc, syllabus content has been mainly based on sports like soccer or basketball, putting rural sport aside. Because its incorporation would provide several blessings for education and because the materials needed are, on the whole, easy to acquire, this article displays several different reasons and several purposes that are pursued by including rural sports in the educational process (to make it known, physical exercise, its promotion within society, etc). This article also includes a classification of rural sports with its main characteristics, contributions to education, and a project centred in the introduction of jai-alai in compulsory education
