Summary

This work examines the biographical milestones of Francisco Adán de Yarza (1476-1550), lord of the house and estate of Zubieta and kinship leader of the Oñaz faction in the town of Lekeitio and its surrounding region. As the heir to a significant patrimony and an extensive list of privileges —political, economic, and ecclesiastical— he sought to establish a privileged relationship with the Crown, other Oñaz lineages of the Lordship of Bizkaia, and its emerging institutions to preserve
the status of his house and maintain his influence and power. However, local institutions grew stronger, resolving their disputes with the Lord of Zubieta in the courts of the Crown. Gradually yet inexorably, the balance of power shifted in favor of the council, the ecclesiastical authorities, the guild of seamen, and the town’s mercantile oligarchy.
