Summary
Music is very important within popular culture (folk music), and folk music also exists in the Basque Country, as in many other places. Autochthonous musical instruments have been and are very diverse, although some of these instruments have been lost with the passage of time. Transmission from one generation to the next has changed considerably: it used to be by word of mouth, nowadays, traditional songs can be listened from recordings. A classification of different Basque traditional instruments is made. As for the current pitiful situation of these instruments, it has been commented that schools would be able to do something to somewhat alleviate the situation, for example by making them known to the students (as is done with the flute) and to give musicians the opportunity to use themSing up and download the publications of Eusko Ikaskuntza
