Summary
This article analyses the adaptation of Sauveur Candau (1897-1955) and other contemporary Basque missionaries to the Japanese culture. Instead of traditional national narratives, it adopts a global approach, paying attention to the Basque-Japanese intercultural affinities that shaped the transmission of evangelical doctrine. It s how the Basque missionaries interpreted both these affinities and the similarities the Basque and Japanese languages. Candau’s so-called “psychological method” reflecting his appropriation of the Japanese way of thinking, represents the evolution from the awareness of cultural affinity to adaptation.
