Possibly the reason for the basquephile phenomenon was due to Basque-iberianism (the first inhabitants of the peninsula might have been the Basques). The Basque Studies Society -Eusko Ikaskuntza organized congresses and constituted an important network of collaborators in Europe, especially in Germany, but the civil war and, above all, World War II did away with this network, and Basque studies disappeared from European universities
