Summary
In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, the Basque government began construction of the Iron Ring to protect Bilbao from the Nationalist forces. It was a line of trenches and barbed wire that encircled the city. The defences were broken on 12 June, 1937 and Bilbao fell on the 19th. It is a topic beseiged by a lack of resources, disloyalty and myth.
