Ugalde, Jesus M.
Jesus M. Ugalde Uribe-Etxebarria is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He holds a degree from the University of Valladolid and a PhD in Chemistry from the same University (1984). He was a postdoctoral researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennesee, USA (1987), at Dalhousie University, Canada (1986 and 1989) and at Cornell University, USA (1992). He has published more than 300 scientific publications, more than ten book review articles and 20 popular science essays. He has been a member of the editorial board of Scientific Reports since 2015 and of the editorial board of Computation since 2013.
Echeverría, Javier
Javier Echeverria Ezponda is a researcher at the Basque Science Foundation (Ikerbasque). He is also affiliated to the Department of Sociology II at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and is Professor on leave of absence from the Institute of Philosophy of the CSIC. His main fields of research have been the philosophy of science and technology; the ethics of science; the study of the relations between science, technology and society and the new information and communication technologies.
Alonso Alicia
B.Sc. in Biology (1977). PhD in Biochemistry, University of Bilbao (1980). Post-doctoral Scientist at the Royal Free Hospital, University of London, under D. Chapman (1981-82). Her research has dealt with the interactions of cell and model membranes with detergents and the role of lipids in membrane fusion, with special attention to lipid-protein interactions in autophagy. Professor of Biochemistry at the University of the Basque Country, since 1992, in Bilbao. First Head of the newly created Unidad de Biofísica (CSIC-UPV/EHU) (1998), where she is now a Group Leader. President of the Spanish Biophysical Society (2006-2010), Member of the Council of IUPAB (International Union for Pure and Applied Biophysics) for two terms (2008-2014).
Prieto, Manuel
Manuel Prieto (PhD, 1981; Habilitation, 1993) is Full Professor at “Instituto Superior Técnico” (IST) of “Universidade de Lisboa” (Portugal), and Past-President (2024-2027) of IUPAB (International Union of Pure and Applied Biophysics). His work on Molecular and Cell Biophysics obtained international recognition, namely in the application of state-of-the art fluorescence methodologies, allowing to retrieve topological and dynamic information on biological systems using quantitative approaches, in membrane biophysics, lipid-protein/peptide and lipid-DNA interaction, amyloid fiber formation, and ion channels. Working in Biophysics, a bridge science between biology and others such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, allows a comprehensive scientific approach. He is strongly committed to science outreach activities both in Portugal and Latin-America, emphasizing its connections with humanities.
Goñi, Félix M.
MD (University of Navarra) in 1975. Professor of Biochemistry at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) Bilbao, Spain (1984 onwards, Emeritus Professor since 2021). Founder and Head of the “Unidad de Biofísica”, a joint centre of CSIC and the University of the Basque Country (2002-2015). His research has dealt with several aspects of the structure and dynamics of biological membranes, using a variety of biophysical approaches (calorimetry, IR and fluorescence spectroscopy, advanced fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy) together with molecular biology and computational tools. Teacher of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the undergraduate level for over 40 years. Promoter of the new degree in Biochemistry at the UPV/EHU (1993).
Esteban, María Jesús
Born in 1956 in the Basque Country, Maria J. Esteban is an emerita research director in mathematics at CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique) in Paris and works in the areas of nonlinear analysis and mathematical physics. In addition to her research work, Maria J. Esteban is deeply involved in the mathematical community activities. In particular, she has been president of SMAI (Société Française de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles) and of ICIAM (International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics). She is a member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy of Sciences and Letters, Academia Europaea, the European Academy of Sciences and foreign member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and of the Royal Spanish Academy of Sciences. She holds honorary doctorates from the Universities of the Basque Country, Valencia and Heriot-Watt.
Aldasoro-Zabala, Aloña
Aloña Aldasoro earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Barcelona (UB) in 2020, followed by a Master’s degree in Forensic Genetics, Chemistry, and Physics from Rovira i Virgili University (URV) in 2021. Currently, she is a PhD candidate in the Human Evolutionary Biology Group at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Her research focuses on forensic and evolutionary sciences, with a particular interest in the analysis of ancient and degraded DNA. Since 2022, she has held a predoctoral fellowship from the Basque Government’s Researchers Program.
Hervella, Montse
Monserrat Hervella received the Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry (2005) and the PhD in Biology (2010) from the University of the Basque Country. She has held various teaching positions in both the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science & Technology. Currently, she is a “Doctor Researcher” in the latter. She has collaborated with international researchers through several stays in european institutions participating in Paleogenomics projects both in methodological aspects of ancient DNA analysis techniques and in the discussion and writing of papers. Some of the publications have been very relevant in the field of Archaeogenetics due to their novel approaches.
De-la-Rúa, Concepción
Conchi de la Rúa earn both Bachelor’s degree in Biology and in Medicine, and the PhD in Biology (1986) in the University of the Basque Country. She is full Professor in Biological Anthropology in the UPV/EHU. She has carried out and intense research career focused on the study of the current and past Basque population. Promoter of the formation of the ancient DNA laboratory at the Faculty of Science and Technology and head of the “Human evolutionary Biology” research group (group A of the Basque University System for the last 20 years). Her current research focuses on Paleogenomics, having studied human remains from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. She is an elected member of Jakiunde since November 2014.
Marco, Tomás
Tomás Marco was Professor of New Techniques at the Conservatorio Superior de Madrid and Professor of Music History at the UNED. He worked for eleven years in the musical services of Radio Nacional de España. From 1981 to 1985 he was Managing Director of the Organismo Autónomo Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España and from 1991 to 1995, Technical Director of the same ensembles. From 1985 to 1995 he was Director of the Centro para la Difusión de la Música Contemporánea. He is currently Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and a member of the Council of Culture of the Government of Navarre. As a composer he is the author of more than 250 works, including seven operas, a ballet, a zarzuela, ten symphonies, choral music, chamber music, music for theatre and audiovisuals. He is Doctor Honoris Causa of the Complutense University of Madrid and, among his awards, he received the National Music Prize in 1969 and 2002, the Gold Medal of the Madrid Conservatory, the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts, the National Radio Broadcasting Prize and the Ondas Prize. He is the author, among other works, of Pensamiento musical y siglo XX ( 2003) and Historia cultural de la música ( 2008).
Olcoz Basarte, Iñigo
Iñigo Olcoz obtained the Degree in Industrial Technologies Engineering from the Public University of Navarra with the Extraordinary End of Degree Award. He also received a Master's Degree in Industrial Engineering from the Public University of Navarra, as well as the title of University Expert in Data Science and Big Data. He currently leads the technological area of Phygital Solutions as an Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Software Engineer in the Navarre-based company Veridas. Previously, he has worked in the biomedical engineering sector as a data engineer at the San Sebastian company Deneb Medical. In the past, he has also collaborated with the National Renewable Energy Centre (CENER) and with the Physics and Mechanical Engineering departments of the Public University of Navarra. Since 2018 he combines his industrial professional activity with his academic work as an associate professor at the Public University of Navarra in the Department of Statistics, Computer Science and Mathematics. He is also mentor of the Navarrese foundation for Artificial Intelligence LUZIA, where he develops and teaches Artificial Intelligence courses to students and teachers, and is one of the promoters of the Artificial Intelligence Week.
Eslava Arraiza, Sergio
Musician, teacher, historian, saxophonist, singer, pianist and researcher. These are some of the facets that Sergio Eslava Arraiza (Pamplona, 1995) has developed in his professional career at the age of 29. He carries out his main musical and teaching activity in the region of Navarre. He has received the Young Person of Navarre 2023 Award and the Pamplona Person of the Year 2023 Award. Trained at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Navarra with honours and the End of Degree Award, he completed his studies in France and holds three master's degrees in Musical Research, Teacher Training and Educational Centre Management, with an award for the best academic record. He also holds a degree in Geography and History from the UNED and is currently in his 3rd year of a History. He is currently in his 3rd year of Art History, collaborating with the University in various lectures in their summer courses. He has won more than 10 prizes in national and international music competitions, performing on stages in France, Italy, Croatia, Thailand and Spain. He is the coordinator of the NAK Festival of Contemporary Music of Navarre and president of the saxophone association Kuarist, as well as a regular collaborator with organisations such as the Pamplonesa and the Sinfonietta Académica de Pamplona.
Arbona Puértolas, Leire
Leire Arbona Puértolas is a double graduate in Business Administration and Management and Law from the Public University of Navarre. She has completed the Advanced Programme in Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing at the International University of La Rioja and the Executive MBA at ESEUNE Business School. In 2017 she joined the Navarre-based company Veridas as a legal advisor, creating and managing the Legal and Compliance department. Leire advocates for a balance between technological development and compliance and respect for users' rights, especially privacy and security, always seeking an enabling approach. Leire has worked directly and actively in the process of drafting Spanish, European and third country legislation on biometrics, identity, Artificial Intelligence and data protection. She has also given numerous lectures on the subject at national, European and international level, and has collaborated as a lecturer in the Digital Law Expert Degree of the Public University of Navarra and as a mentor in the first edition of the Artificial Intelligence Week. In addition to her work in legal matters, she collaborates in Veridas' development cooperation projects by coordinating mentoring and education initiatives that promote digital literacy and teaching in programming and Artificial Intelligence among the most vulnerable communities in Latin America.
Morrás Andrés, Esteban
Esteban Morrás Andrés, born in Sesma (Navarra) on 27 May 1958, holds a degree in Law from the University of Navarra. In his professional life, he dedicated his first ten years to public service as Secretary of his home town of Sesma, of the Mancomunidad de Montejurra, of the Federación Navarra de Municipios y Concejos and of the Mancomunidad de la Comarca de Pamplona. The next twenty years were devoted to renewable energies with the creation of EHN, today ACCIONA Energia, which was, and continues to be, one of the world leaders in defining a sustainable energy model that today is essential for the future of humanity. He has spent the last fourteen years co-founding and consolidating the following three companies: Das Nano Tech. Born from the collaboration with physicists Javier Tejada Palacios and Eugene Chudnovsky, it has developed innovative industrial solutions on a global scale in the measurement of conductivity and paint thickness using Terahertz waves. Veridas is an Artificial Intelligence company applied to Digital Identity with algorithms repeatedly ranked by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology among the top three in the world. Vitio Medical is a company dedicated to the generation of early health alerts by monitoring vital signs.
Aguirresarobe, Javier
He studied Cinematography at the Escuela Oficial de Cinematografía de Madrid. Until he shot his first film Qué hace una chica como tú en un sitio como éste by F. Colomo (1979), he combined work as a journalist, photographer and photo lab technician. His first film was followed by El proceso de Burgos, La fuga de Segovia and La muerte de Mikel, three films directed by Imanol Uribe that consolidated his career as a professional film photographer. In Madrid he shot films such as El bosque animado by José Luis Cuerda; El sol del membrillo by Víctor Erice; Beltenebros, El perro del hortelano, and Tu nombre envenena mis sueños by Pilar Miró. Días contados by Imanol Uribe. In recent years he has appeared in the films La niña de tus ojos by Fernando Trueba; Los otros and Mar adentro by Alejandro Amenábar; Hable con ella by Pedro Almodóvar; Soldados de Salamina by David Trueba; Goya's ghosts by Milos Forman; The city of your final destination by James Ivory; Vicky Cristina Barcelona by Woody Allen; The road, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy and directed by John Hillcoat; and Crepúsculo-Nueva Luna directed by Chris Weitz. He has won the National Cinematography Award and six Goya Awards for Best Photography. In 2009 he received the Vasco Universal Award, and in 2012 the award Una Vida de Cine.
Ibarretxe-Bilbao, Naroa
Naroa Ibarretxe Bilbao, holds a degree in Psychology from the University of Deusto (2005) and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Barcelona (20029). She is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Director of the Master’s in Clinical Neuropsychology at the University of Deusto. She is a researcher in the Neuropsychology of Severe Medical Disorders (NeuroLab) group, where she leads research projects in the field of neuroimaging and neuropsychology in neurodegenerative diseases. Her main research interests are the neuroanatomical and neurofunctional brain correlates of cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease, effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation and which variables have the greatest impact on the quality of life of patients. She has numerous publications in influential international scientific journals specialized in neurology, neuropsychology, neuroimaging and neuroscience in general. She collaborates with international reference centers such as Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain, the CAMH Brain Health Imaging Centre in Canada, the Kessler Foundation and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. She also collaborates regularly with patient associations, and the projects she has led have received several awards for their scientific and social impact. She is a young corresponding member of JAKIUNDE since November 2016.
Jimeno Aranguren, Roldán
Roldán Jimeno is Professor of History of Law and Institutions at the Public University of Navarra (UPNA), and currently Secretary General of this University. He holds a degree in Law from the UNED, a degree in History from the University of Navarra with an Extraordinary Prize and Third National End-of-Degree Prize, a PhD in History from the same University, a PhD in Philosophy and Education Sciences from the UPV/EHU, and a PhD in Law from the University of Deusto. Prior to teaching at the UPNA, he was a professor at the University of Navarra (1996-2001) and at the Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour (2001-2003). He has several research stays in academic centers in the United States, Italy, France and Ireland. Author of about twenty books, he has two hundred articles in specialized journals and collaborations in collective works. Director of the Príncipe de Viana Journal, published by the Government of Navarre. Member of the Advisory Council of Civil Law of Navarre and member of the Navarre Council of Culture. He is also a corresponding member of Jakiunde.
