In this paper we give a brief presentation of the history and principal concepts related to artificial intelligence. We review the latest developments in Deep Learning and we analyse the fundamental role of data in the recent explosion of algorithms and applications, including Big Data in the Industry 4.0. We conclude with a brief discussion of the ethical risks linked to the use of data.
