In the Middle Ages "charivaris" used to be conjured against those that married for the second time. Later additionally reasons were used, as when the marriages were strange. In the XIV century they were mainly organized during Carnival by societies whose purpose was the amusement and they members were mostly young people. The person they made the "charivari" against could pay to avoid it. Later they were forbidden but in Iparralde they continue to take place as their prohibition produced discomfort in the population.
