Summary

In the occidental shores of the Iberian Peninsula the prototypes of the bestequipped European ships for ocean navigation were developed. Thanks to this technological advantage, Spain outsailed the other maritime nations in the continent and was a first-line protagonist of the European geographical expansion. Most of those ships were built in the Bay of Biscay, especially in its eastern half, in what are now the regions of Cantabria and the Basque Country.
