Summary

Due to ancient customs, the Basques suffered, within their families, unequal treatment depending on their birth ranking. With the enforcement of the Civil Code, they have had to make concessions and elaborate new strategies in order to preserve the tradition of the single inheritance. Although some women acquired rights, they did not have the same opportunities as men, which sometimes explains their different destinies.
