Summary

This article contributes to the knowledge of the rural municipality of the Ancien Regime through the analysis of the Concejo of Gordejuela. We will take into account both the institutional organization of the Concejo, and the behaviour of the social groups in their relationship to the local power. Institutionally, Gordejuela´s Valley had a great capacity of self-regulation during the XVIIIth century and it was able to resist the attempts of the provincial power (Corregidor, Diputación and Juntas de Gernika) to control the Encartaciones. The jurisdictional autonomy and the corporate union of the Concejos played an essential part in maintaining the local autonomy. Socially, the Concejo of Gordejuela was dominated by the local aristocracy which controlled the Regimiento. However, along with the landowners´ power the community could participate through the local assembly in which every neighbour, both owners and tenants, were able to take part. This political pattern was related to the Community as a kind of social organization, in which authority was based on personal relationships and where the communal self-regulation was essential
