Summary

This volume contains the motions presented to 3rd Health and Society Sessions - Osasuna eta Gizartea on hospitalised child. The first six motions collect the medical aspects of the hospitalisation of children, in which their current situation and future perspectives are analysed. Children?s and parents? opinions on the matter are revealed, and the treatment of pain in children and the ethical and social aspects of this type of hospitalisation are studied, especially in the special units, like those for the new-born and those for paediatric intensive care. The last four motions approach the psychological consequences of the hospitalisation on the child and family and the concrete problems of two groups of special paediatric patients, like children with cancer and the mentally retarded. This work provides us with information on the type of nourishment of the Basques in the end of the Neolithic period. This is a presentation of six original projects, on various medical topics (Basque urologists, tobacco addiction, alcoholism, the organisation of a Surgery service, nutritional characteristics of the milk elaborated in "La gota de leche" and references to a "Children?s Health Booklet" edited by Eusko Ikaskuntza). The volume ends with a historical document on a contract made out to a surgeon and procedures for midwives, written by Juan Garmendia Larrañaga.
