Summary

Jean Louis Davant (1935-, Ürrüstoi-Larrabile, Soule) is a prolific Basque author. He has worked in diverse literary genres, including poetry, novel, essay, children's literature (translating many short stories into Basque) and (pastoral) theatre, in addition to making contributions to Basque History. In 1975, he was named an honorary member of the Euskaltzaindia (Academy of the Basque Language). He is one of the creators of Standard Basque, but he has also shown great erudition in his promotion of the Souletine language. In his own words: The Basque dialects help Standard Basque grow, and Standard Basque as well as the dialects are equally necessary for the survival of Euskara.
